Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

DiproSone Ointment (betamethasone dipropionate) is a powerful corticosteroid for use on skin conditions responsive to corticosteroids, where it reduces the pain, inflammation, redness and itching associated with such conditions.

Patients typically buy DiproSone Ointment to treat skin conditions such as:

  • Atopic eczema
  • Allergic contact dermatitis
  • Irritant contact dermatitis
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Photodermatitis
  • Lichen planus
  • Erythroderma
  • Prurigo nodularis

Note that the ointment should not be used on the face or groin without explicit doctor permission. Additionally, because it does suppress the immune system near the application site, it should not be applied to infected or broken skin.

This product can be used in patients age 13 and up. Parents wanting to buy DiproSone Ointment for younger children should consult a doctor.

Ointment versus Cream

DiproSone Ointment is also available as a cream, sold as Diprolene Cream. Choosing to buy DiproSone Ointment or Diprolene Cream comes down to what sort of skin condition is being treated:

  • The ointment is oil-based; it's thick and greasy compared to the cream, and relatively difficult to wash off. Patients will want to buy DiproSone Ointment for dry, scaly patches of skin.
  • The cream is both oil- and water-based; it is quickly absorbed and easily washed off. Patients will want to buy Diprolene Cream for moist or weepy areas of skin.

Other than the formulation of inactive ingredients the two products are exactly the same and completely interchangeable.

Restore Skin Health with DiproSone Ointment

DiproSone Ointment is a very potent corticosteroid, with most patients getting their skin condition under control within two weeks of treatment. However, caution should be exercised to avoid overuse of the medication:

  • Gently rub in a thin layer of the ointment directly on the affected areas once or twice per day.
  • Continue until the condition is under control.
  • Do not exceed 50 grams of the ointment in one week.
  • Do not use the ointment for more than two consecutive weeks.

If the skin condition hasn't responded to the two weeks of treatment it's probably not responsive to corticosteroids; a doctor should be consulted. If it has improved significantly but isn't yet under control, treatment may continue a little longer with doctor permission. DiproSone Ointment can produce serious side effects and it should not be used frivolously.

DiproSone Ointment on the Face

Patients are often tempted to use DiproSone Ointment (or other corticosteroids) on the face. This should be avoided in all but the most severe circumstances, as using corticosteroids can cause more problems than they fix---and this is especially true of potent versions, which DiproSone Ointment is. Use on the face can cause:

  • Rosacea, especially in women
  • Reduction in collagen, leading to thinning of the skin
  • Telangiectasia, in which blood vessels cause red lines on the skin
  • Purpura, in which small blood vessels leak blood, causing purple spots
  • Perioral dermatitis, in which the skin around the mouth becomes inflamed
  • Opportunistic infection from the many types of microbes that contact the face

If other methods of treatment have failed, a corticosteroid can be used on the face for up to two weeks at a time, avoiding use on the particularly delicate skin around the eyes. Again, this should only be done with the involvement of a doctor.
